List

What makes Spielberg films so emotional, could it be the music of John Williams. Could this be an Auteur signature?

Focus Film

1)
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
The music for this film is very iconic and emotionally powerful, this is one of the reasons the film the classic it is. The clip of music I will analyse (the scene its in as well) is when the bike passes the moon. I will also analyse the opening where E.T. is left behind. The last scene I will be analysing is the end scene where E.T. leaves.

Supporting Films

2) Jaws (1975)
This is seen as a classic in the film industry. It is very well known for its two note shark attack. The first scene of the film is the scene I will be analysing as it sets up the film as it introduces the shark and makes the audience connote the track with the shark. I will be analysing the opening of the film.

3) The B.F.G. (2016)
This film contrasts Jaws, to show the range of work and if his 'signature' passes through all of his work (From Family films to Horrors). The scene I will be analysing is where the B.F.G. kidnaps Sophie from the orphanage.

Theory (books)

4) The pocket essential film studies - Andrew M. Butler
I am using this book for the definition of Auteur theory. It has a lot of information about what makes an auteur. There are many parts of this book that help with the understanding of what an auteur is. This is what I will be using for the definition of auteur theory.

5) A Musical Biography Of John Williams
In this book it gives insight into what John Wiliams does with Spielberg when it comes to composing the music for the films. I will use quotes from this to show that the music made by John Williams in these films makes Spielberg an auteur.

6) The Routledge Companion to Philosophy and Films
This books sorts the different types of music into the different categories. It also raises points about how the music creates emotion in film. I will use key quotes to support points that I make about how the music creates the emotion in Spielberg films.

Interviews

6) The BFG Interview John Williams
https://youtu.be/9x8z-gspfF8
In this interview it is John Williams talking about what he done to create this piece of music and how it fits with the scene. This will give valuable insight into the thought process of John Williams when composing the music for this film.

7) Steven Spielberg with John Williams talk about the soundtracks for E.T. and Jaws https://youtu.be/5_8RTDbDVTU
In this interview, they talk about the their relationship when dealing with the creating of the music. What they had originally and how they felt about it and the final product. In this interview they talk about how the process of making the music is.

8) The E.T. - A Discussion with John Williams
https://youtu.be/noGnO_glDek
In this interview he talks about the music throughout the film including the soundtrack that I will be analysing. In this interview he talks about the process that they went through to get to the final piece. he talks about his initial ideas and how they developed.

Reviews

9-11)
Empire magazine
I have chosen the reviews from this magazine because it is a trusted source for reviews on films. these reviews are unbiased and are justified. This is a respected magazine. in these reviews, they rate the entire film and they talk about the music that is in the films.

12-14) Common sense media
This website has many different ways of rating the films in question. It also has quite a bit on audience reaction to music.this will be useful to see the opinions of people who have viewed the films and commented on the music. tis will help me decide whether the type of music/audience reaction is unique to Spielberg films.

15-16) Static Mass Emporium
this review web sight goes into more detail about some of the things Empire and Common Sense Media do not as they go into great detail about the music so i will use quotes to support the emotions that the music brings up.

Rejected items

1941
I chose to reject 194 because John Williams did not compose the music in the film, so this film is irrelevant to my study.

Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi
I have chosen Return Of The Jedi to reject as the music is composed by John Williams but is not directed by Steven Spielberg so this film is irrelevant to my study.
